Teen robber bailed until sentencing
A teenager pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery when he appeared in Magistrates' Court.
Jahreko Hill, 16, of Vesey Street, targeted two men in separate incidents in Devonshire as part of a gang of youths.
Magistrates' Court heard the first offence took place outside a Lindo's store on March 5 at 8.45 p.m. The victim, Joseph Maxwell Budzynski, was travelling home from the Bermuda Squash Club when he stopped to withdraw $100 from an ATM.
Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said: "He looked around him and saw three to four men approach him, one with a hood over his head. They grabbed the money and pushed him away from the ATM."
The gang then grabbed his motorcycle helmet from his head and started punching him and kicking him. Ms Burgess said: "They said 'What's your PIN number', and fearing for his life, the complainant gave them his number."
A passer-by then came to his assistance, causing the men to run off, but they got away with $4,200 worth of property, including another $200 in cash, an IBM laptop, Ray-Ban sunglasses, an iPod, earphones, cell phone, money clip and helmet.
Two other teenagers, Keishun Trott, 17, and Zeko Rubaine, 19, last month pleaded guilty to their part in the robbery.
In the second incident, Hill was involved in an attack on Christopher Griffith on May 4.
Ms Burgess said Mr. Griffith was on his way home at 10.10 p.m. when he noticed four to six black men by the side of Watlington Road East.
"He was then grabbed and pulled off his motorbike, falling to the ground," she said. "They took his helmet off and he was beaten about the head and body."
During the assault, the victim was told to "look away" and he eventually managed to run away. He received treatment at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for his injuries. The gang got away with a wallet, helmet, keys and his motorcycle.
Defence lawyer Larry Scott said Hill had been in custody since August 18, and this had proved "a short sharp shock" for the defendant.
"I think this has been a salutary reminder for young Jahreko and I don't think we are likely to see this young fellow before us any longer," said Mr. Scott.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted Hill bail on condition of a surety and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. He will be sentenced on January 13.
