Teenager is fined for alerting drug suspects of Police officers' approach
A 16-year old boy pleaded guilty yesterday to obstructing justice by assisting drug suspects to escape Police.
Prosecutor Robert Welling told Magistrates' Court that Ayinde Eve, of Pembroke, interfered as Police attempted to stop a hand-to-hand drug transaction.
The court heard that around 4 p.m. on June 3 Police were on patrol in the area of Court and Elliot Street when they witnessed two men in an alley engaging in what appeared to be a drugs sale.
When Police approached the suspects a young man yelled to them "the man is coming!". On hearing the warning one of the men immediately dropped a brown paper bag and both took off running. One of the men was eventually caught and arrested.
Three days later Eve was recognised as someone who had obstructed the course of justice and was subsequently arrested by Police. When he was informed of why he was being arrested he said "what obstruction?"
When questioned by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner as to why he prevented the Police from performing their duties, he said: "I was in my backyard and I saw the Police so I warned my friend. I am very sorry."
Mr. Warner fined Eve $600.
