A $1 million-plus upgrade of the Police computer system is underway.

According to newly-appointed Assistant Commissioner Paul Wright, this will allow officers to compile sophisticated maps of where and when incidents are happening then target these hot spots.

Coupled with this, he said, the Police will in future release statistics on "absolutely everything" crime-related rather than the selected quarterly crime report they currently publicise.

This focuses on a handful of areas such as violent crime, firearms and robbery but in future it will include other aspects such as gang crime, antisocial behaviour and domestic violence.

"We recognise that the public is very concerned about crime, there's a fear of crime in the community that is some cases is disproportionate to what the figures actually are," Mr. Wright told The Royal Gazette.

"We're also looking at effective use of technology, particularly GIS mapping of crime, geo-coding where these incidents happen, so we can report on crime to people in a much more dynamic and graphic user interface.

"Perhaps they can see heat maps of neighbourhoods they live in, to see what types of crime is happening and when.

"We're hoping better crime reporting will help reduce the fear of crime where that's disproportionate."
