Volunteer's bag and expensive contents are sold by accident at a charity shop

She was only doing some charity work but almost ended up paying a hefty price after a mix-up over her bag.

Christina Ho, 24, from Singapore, is working on the book ship the Logos Hope, currently berthed on Front Street, but took time out on Wednesday to volunteer at the Salvation Army thrift store, on King Street, in Hamilton.

Taking her bag with her, she placed it on a shelf. Inside was an $800 iPhone, a $150 pair of new Oakley sunglasses, a video camera and a wallet with $150 inside.

However, while Christina was away from the shop, an elderly lady serving saw the bag and assumed it was just another item for sale especially as customers expressed interest in the items inside.

So not knowing any better, the iPhone went for $5 and the Oakley glasses also sold for another $5.

The bag itself was a bargain another $5. Not bad considering it still had the $150 cash and video camera inside that, though was quickly returned by the person who bought it.

Luckily, also, the iPhone was returned, when the buyer came back to the store complaining he did not know how to switch it on. But the sunglasses are still missing.

Yesterday, a spokesman for the Salvation Army confirmed the mix-up and said: "The lady who was working is older and didn't realise that the items belonged to anybody. She was just doing her job and selling the things that were in the shop. Happily we live on a very small island and we were able to figure out who bought the items and return them to their owner."

l If you purchased the sunglasses call 518-5118 to contact Christina or call Sergeant Samar on 717-2162 to return them and be reimbursed.
