Azores strengthens friendship with library donation to Bermuda

The Azores Government has donated language books, CDs and DVDs to the Bermuda National Library in a bid to preserve Portuguese identity.The library received the items during a handing-over presentation with musician Eddy De Mello.Public Information Services Minister Neletha Butterfield was in attendance at the Adult Library on Queen Street in Hamilton.Ms Butterfield said it was a “pleasure” to receive the materials from the Government of the Azores.“Our countries have been connected since the first Azorean immigrants sailed to our shores in the mid-nineteenth century.“Our history and culture has been influenced by our Portuguese community since that time.“These books, DVDs and CDs will be a welcome addition to the Adult Services Foreign Language Collection and the Reference Collection of the Cultural Studies Section.”When the materials are prepared for public use they will be available for loan to members, other material will be for reference use only.According to a Government spokesman, Bermuda National Library will be sharing the materials with schools and all local residents not just people in the Portuguese community.l Useful websites: www.bermudanationallibrary.bm, www.azores.gov.pt
