A panel of speakers have discussed their hopes for the Island calling for Bermudians to come together and realise the opportunities we have.During a public forum held on Thursday at the Sandys 360 community centre, Youth Minister Glenn Blakeney said he hoped Bermudians adopt the generosity of spirit that Bermuda is famous for.“I would hope that we could fix ourselves by being humble and being who we are, which is one of the most genial people in the world,” Mr Blakeney said.“We have become known for being like that, which is why we have enjoyed so much success as a tourism destination.”Family Centre executive director Martha Dismont stressed the importance of proactively stopping problems before they arise.“Our work at the family centre is about prevention, and I can see for Bermuda a kind of prevention so that we can get ahead of the problem before it occurs,” she said.Somerset Cricket Club president Alfred Maybury meanwhile said that he hoped Bermudians would find unity, saying: “My hope is that we will recognise the value we each have. That when we see one of our brothers in difficulty that we don’t run away but give assistance.“My aspiration is that we become the people we are supposed to be. All of us must play a part in finding solutions to the problems we face.”Community activist Makai Dickenson agreed, adding that Bermudians need to accept responsibility for its problems instead of blaming things like BET.“I grew up watching BET, but I never picked up a gun because I was raised right,” he said.“We cannot blame BET, we cannot blame the media. We need to realise that the problems we have are the result of everyone.”Managing director of Sandys 360 and former principal Dr Melvyn Bassett said he hoped that Bermudians would realise just how lucky they were.“We are the envy of many parts of the world, and my dream is that we once again recognise the opportunities and the responsibilities we have, particularly the next generation,” he said.lUseful Websites: www.gov.bm, www.tfc.bm
