St George service to remember last US casualty of 1812 war
A service will be held this coming Saturday to commemorate one of the famous sons at rest in the graveyard of 400-year-old St Peter’s church in St George.Midshipman Richard Dale, 20, was the last American victim of the war of 1812. He died in St George on February 22, 1815, from complications associated with losing his leg during an engagement between his ship, the US frigate President, and the Royal Navy.His death, which came just three weeks after the war ended, is commemorated every year and wreaths are laid by the Governor and the US Consul General. This year’s ceremony will begin at 5pm in King’s Square, St George, in front of the Butterfield Bank building. The building used to be Stennett’s hotel, where Midshipman Dale died.It will then proceed to his grave in St Peter’s graveyard and be followed by a reception and dinner at 6pm in Griffin’s restaurant at the St George’s club. The guest speaker will be George Cook, chair of the education committee of the St George’s Foundation. His talk will be on lesser known personalities associated with the Sea Venture.Tickets for the reception and dinner cost $60.
