More than 800 queue for 155 jobs

People crowd the princess rooms at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess for the Hospitality Industry Jobs Fair.

More than 800 people this morning queued up to apply for 155 hospitality jobs. And Minister of Economy, Kim Wilson, said she was overwhelmed with the response saying she did not expect as many people - 838 at the latest count - to show up.The Minister, along with her Permanent Secretary Cherie Whitter, spent the morning at a jobs fair at the Fairmont Hamilton helping people fill out applications for positions such as grounds people, housekeeper, spa director and bar tender. In total 838 people attended.“People have come here with their resume willing to fill the jobs,” Ms Wilson said. “There are positions available and now we are focusing on getting people to fill out the application forms and hand them in.”Kiuntae Smith, 18, graduated from CedarBridge Academy last year. She showed up to the fair at Fairmont Hamilton smartly dressed with a resume in hand.“I think of this as a job interview,” she said. “It's been hard to get a job since I graduated as they want people with degrees or experience.“It's great that they have organised this but there are so many people and there aren't as many jobs.”While Ms Smith showed up prepared, others came in torn tracksuit bottoms, or with their mothers in tow.Ms Wilson gave a gentle rebuke to one young man whose pants slipped down too low. After speaking with him she said the Ministry had organised a job readiness programme geared towards hospitality. It starts next week and is already full, with 30 participants.“We planning on doing one next month, and the month after and to keep going,” she said. “It will be teaching people soft skills, the basics, to help them get ahead in the industry.”
