Bermuda’s chess players did their bit for tourism at the weekend attracting scores of overseas visitors for an international competition.Participants in the 27th Bermuda International Open Chess Tournament came from all over the world, including Uganda, America and the UK and many enjoyed it so much they pledged to come back.Bermuda Chess Association club organiser Larry Ebbin said 46 players took part, many travelling to the Island with companions to stay at the Fairmont Southampton. The three-day event took place at the hotel and the winner was US Grandmaster Larry Christiansen, a player described as an “American master of attack”. He won an all-expenses paid trip back to Bermuda.Mr Ebbin said: “It was fantastic. Almost everyone I know that came down thanked us and some said they would return.”Those attending included six members of the Marylebone Cricket Club’s Chess Society, from Lord’s in London. They stayed on after the tournament in order to compete against local players.“They came out on top,” said Mr Ebbin. “We played two games per person and because we had so many local players we broke it up into two teams.”Useful website: www.bermudachess.com.
