Still flying: The Spanish Point Boat Club and the Bermuda flag get battered as gale force winds and brief showers hit Bermuda yesterday with winds as high as 76 knots.
Storm force winds battered the Island yesterday, with gusts reaching 76 knots (87.4mph) according to the Bermuda Weather Service.According to the service, winds across the Island yesterday morning reached 35 knots (40.2mph), with gusts as high as 65 knots (74.8mph).A spokesman for the service said: “The peak winds we recorded were a steady 52 knots (59.8mph) with maximum gusts of 76 knots (87.4mph) at around noon at Commissioner's Point. We had strong winds across the Island.”Despite the strength of the winds, the spokesman said minor damage to a doorframe was the only damage reported, and flights to and from the Island were not impacted.“The wind was running right down the runway,” he said. “We had some reports of turbulence and what we call speed shear, but we're not expecting any cancellations or delays.”In Hamilton, the winds toppled parked motorcycles, while high waves on North Shore over the weekend inspired kite surfers to take to the waters. The winds are expected to weaken this morning, but rise again tomorrow in advance of another cold front expected to pass over the Island tomorrow night.Useful website: www.weather.bm
