Lottery winners to get their homes next week
Harbour View Village will open its doors to lottery winners next week following years of delays.National Security Minister David Burch announced he and Premier Paula Cox would host the grand opening of the site on March 5.Plans for the Harbour View project were first put forward in 2004.Two hundred town houses were proposed at that time half were to be sold at market rate, and the other half at a discounted rate of $199,000.However, businesses on the 16 acres of land intended for the project refused to move, causing the project to move to a smaller parcel of land.In June 2005, 99 families won the opportunity to purchase units at the St David’s development.Less than three months later non-profit group Bermuda Homes for People, who originally spearheaded the project, pulled out.Government announced later that year that it would step in to see the project completed. In June 2006, Sen Burch announced a scaled-down development would be ready by the end of the year. Work was delayed by the discovery of a massive underground storage tank beneath the site and harsh winter weather. In December 2010, Burch said the homes would not be ready by Christmas, but said the first four buildings, containing 58 units, would be ready in the first quarter of the year.He said that funds from the sale of the units would go towards the construction of additional units at the site.In the five years since the lottery was held, 15 of the 99 winners have opted out of the project for various reasons.Speaking on Friday, Sen Burch said: “The Bermuda Housing Corporation continues to go from strength to strength.“Loughlands, Perimeter Lane and Grand Atlantic are all at varying stages of development and occupancy so that the housing needs of our people are being met.”lUseful websites: www.gov.bm.
