Voter registration drive launched

An awareness campaign has been launched to encourage voters to get correctly registered. With an estimated 2,000 people wrongly registered many listed to vote in areas they no longer live the Parliamentary Registry will be holding registration drives in grocery stores and putting adverts up throughout Hamilton.A video has also been put together to help explain how 4,500 households have switched constituencies because of boundary changes which come into force at the next general election.Assistant Parliamentary Registrar Tenia Woolridge told a press conference held to launch Voter Awareness Month: “During this month we encourage all voters to ensure that their registration details are up-to-date.“In addition this year there will be a specific focus on ensuring that all voters are aware of the changes made to the constituency boundaries and the effects these changes will have on the electorate.”Registrar Randy Scott said people incorrectly registered would likely be challenged when they go to vote.“It can cause some aggravation to the voter if they are challenged at the polls,” he said.Residents can change their details by logging on to the Parliamentary Registry’s website or visiting the office at 60 Reid Street.Anyone whose constituency has been affected by the boundary changes will be notified by mail.
