Customs officer denies any role in drug plot

A Customs today officer denied any role in a drug plot, saying there is an innocent explanation for text messages that prosecutors say implicate him in the conspiracy.Bromwin Thompson said when he realised the messages from his friend Shannon Berkley related to a suspicious package, he “panicked” to the extent that he deleted Mr Berkley's number from his phone.Mr Thompson was working at the FedEx facility on Serpentine Road, Pembroke, in 2009 when two packages were discovered containing $54,725 of cannabis and cannabis resin.According to prosecutors, he conspired with Mr Berkley to import the drugs and text messages between the two are evidence of this.Prosecutor Nicole Smith has told the Supreme Court jury Mr Thompson knew the packages contained drugs and his role was to look out for them and intercept them. However, Mr Thompson said today he had no idea the packages contained drugs. He said text messages from Mr Berkley were just requests for him to look to see if packages had arrived; something his friends often asked him to do.
