Bermudian wins Top Model Worldwide

Bermudian model Deandra Brangman

Bermudian model Deandra Brangman’s family say they’re over the moon after her victory in the UK.Lamont Robinson of JaKoMa Entertainment where the now 21-year-old beauty made her debut said he was “amazed, but not that surprised” that his former protegee took Top Model Worldwide at Top Model UK.“Things like this only happen once in a lifetime,” said stepfather Raymond Ming. “Some great things have happened to Deandra in the past few weeks.“My wife Sandra and I couldn’t be any higher up than this. We’re both extremely proud of her.”Top Model UK’s grand finals in London last month were the biggest in the event’s six year history. After winning, Ms Brangman credited her “killer walk” for setting her apart from other contestants.Xenia Dill, the former model who helped to train her, agreed.“Her walk? Oh yes, by far she definitely had a good walk; that was what wowed us about her. We helped her to develop it. It’s a combination of what she came in with, and JaKoMa taking time to polish it.”Ms Brangman, of Southampton, was 16 years old and still a student at Berkeley Institute when she auditioned at the agency, and joined its first course for training models.“She was one of the very few with the looks, the walk, everything,” Ms Dill said. “Deandra was clearly very comfortable with herself, a great demeanour and a real pleasure to work with. She’s awesome. I wasn’t surprised to see that she won.”Over a few years with JaKoMa, Ms Brangman took part regularly in the agency’s shows, as well as doing pictures for Gibbons Company ads.Mr Robinson recalled that Ms Brangman, who studies in the US, had dropped by the agency a few weeks ago, just before the competition. “She let out the secret to me. I don’t know what she expected, she just wanted to give it a try. I was very proud, gave her words of encouragement, told her to be fierce and be strong and knock ’em dead.“It’s a great achievement for Deandra and for Bermuda. It’s hard work being a model here. For a lot of models, it’s a casual career that they get sporadic work with. Deandra must have been floored to win.”Taking the title means Ms Brangman has the chance to compete on an even bigger stage. Mr Ming said he couldn’t comment on his stepdaughter’s new contract, but that the family would make an official announcement in the coming week.Useful web link: www.topmodeluk.com.
