Former CedarBridge Academy teacher Harvey Knotts, who is accused of sexually abusing children, is out of prison after posting a $1 million bond.Mr Knotts, 40, was being held on ten counts of sexually abusing children at McDonell Elementary School in Huntsville, Alabama, where he was working as a fourth grade teacher. All charges involve McDonell students who are either nine or ten years old. He is also still wanted for questioning in relation to a separate alleged sex attack on a female student at CedarBridge Academy in Bermuda in 2007.Mr Knotts, a father of four children, left Hunstville-Madison County Metro Jail on Friday afternoon. He is now under house arrest and is wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet. He had to surrender his passport to prevent him from fleeing the country and must also regularly report to a probation officer.Mr Knotts was arrested on April 6 and initially charged with seven counts of sexual abuse involving five children. But police have since added three more charges after three more victims came forward. He is now charged with ten counts of sexual abuse against eight child victims.Mr Knotts appeared before Madison County Court in Huntsville on Monday last week and his bond was increased from $230,000 to $1 million. This equates to $10,000 per count.Judge Alison Austin raised the bond as she was concerned that Mr Knotts had left Bermuda when he knew a police investigation was under way. He was described as “a flight risk” and the court also heard he had failed to include his teaching history in Bermuda when he applied to teach in Huntsville in 2007.In early 2004 Mr Knotts was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in Bermuda. He was found guilty but was acquitted when he took it to the Court of Appeal later that year.Mr Knotts was placed on “administrative leave with pay” on the day of his arrest. Mr Knotts is due to appear in court again before Judge Austin on Wednesday, May 4 for a felony hearing.
