‘The Bermudians’ activist group returns to the limelight with music video
The Bermudians are making a comeback to “promote all that is positive” with the Island’s very own ‘We Are The World’ type song and music video. The activist group who led the protests calling for the resignation of the then Premier Ewart Brown is returning to the limelight to promote “Bermudians as one people”.This week they will launch the ‘Proud to be Bermudian’ charity song and video as they believe “it’s time for Bermuda to sing a new song”.The Bermudians want to create “some positive energy” at a time when the Island is suffering from spiralling gun crime. There have been three murders so far this year and last year 29 people were shot, including seven men who were murdered. They say the song is a celebration of all that is good about the Island and they hope it will encourage Bermudians to be proud of their culture, history and traditions. It’s described as a compelling, feel-good song sung by Bermudians with a music video filmed in some easily recognisable spots around the Island. The music video features some of Bermuda’s most well-known faces including musicians, artists and comedians. Musicians John Woolridge and Ron Lightbourne both have starring roles. All money raised from the sale of the CDs and DVDs will then be ploughed back into Bermuda’s public education system. The song is based on the concept of benefit single ‘We Are The World’, which was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie in 1986 to raise money for African famine relief. That song had sales of more than 20 million copies across the globe.Six members of the public founded The Bermudians in June 2009.They were unhappy about Dr Brown’s decision to bring four Guantanamo Bay detainees to Bermuda without consulting the UK Government or Bermuda’s own MPs.They called upon the people to join together against Dr Brown’s one-man style of politics and organised three public demonstrations outside Cabinet. At the time they announced: “We The Bermudians cannot sit quietly and accept the manner in which Bermuda is being led. The time has come to choose a new leader.”Since then the group has been vocally quiet but they insist they are still active, but have been working behind-the-scenes on this venture. And now they want everyone to know that they are back and are focusing on the Island’s positives rather than negatives. It has taken about a year-and-a-half to produce the song and the six-and-a-half-minute video to go with it. The project was the brainchild of John Woolridge. The song and video are being kept under wraps until the project’s official launch at an invite-only event at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel on Wednesday.About 300 invites have been sent out to prominent members of the community, including politicians, those in the media and the stars of the video.Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith will be the guest of honour at the event. The invite states: “Come help us celebrate Bermuda’s rich history, unique beauty and why Bermudians are known as the friendliest people in the world.”The music video will be broadcast on local TV channels on Wednesday evening and will then go on sale for $10.The Bermudians is made up of Janice Battersbee, Erica Rance-Cariah, Marti Chiappa, Gilbert Pitcher, Anne Hyde and John Woolridge. On the group’s website it says although it will continue to monitor the actions of the Country’s leader, its long-term goal is to “work to unify the people of Bermuda and heal divisions that have been created, and will undertake education and awareness projects to advocate for peace, love, unity and respect amongst the people of Bermuda”.Useful website: www.thebermudians.net.
