ChildWatch marks Parental Alienation Awareness Day with Fun In The Park

Magician and balloon sculptor G-Whiz makes the beginnings of a flower at a Family Fun Day organised by ChildWatch yesterday in Victoria Park.

Families made the most of the opportunity to come together and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun at Victoria Park yesterday.Moms, dads and children of all ages soaked up the sunshine with fun castles, puppet shows and a magician, before settling down in the shade with popcorn and snowballs. The Fun In The Park event from 1.30pm to 5pm was organised by the ChildWatch group, to “bring families together”.It was part of International Parental Alienation Awareness Day, which is a global campaign to raise awareness of parental alienationChildWatch co-founder Eddie Tavares said: “We want to help bring families together as all too often families fall apart.“This is a big problem in Bermuda as the cost of rent is so high, families are really struggling to make ends meet. The days of close-knit extended families have also gone, we don’t do as much as a family anymore.“But a fun event like this helps families to get back on track. We are helping to unite families.”It is the second year ChildWatch, which lobbies for better rights for fathers and children from broken homes, has officially recognised the day, along with cities in the US and Canada. Yesterday’s Fun In The Park event was sponsored by The Royal Gazette.UBP Senator Suzann Holshouser, the Shadow Minister of Youth Affairs, Family and Community Development, was also at the event to lend her support. She said: “I support ChildWatch’s hard work and endeavours. Many believe the group is just trying to get out of paying child support, but that’s just not true. The reality is they are putting a child’s rights first. They work to improve situations for the whole family, not just fathers.”Jean Dillas said she had “great fun” at the event with two of her grandchildren. She said: “It’s all very nice as it gives the kids a chance to have a little play and the chance for me to sit down! Most importantly we’re here together.”ChildWatch is also encouraging Bermuda’s residents to spend ten minutes blowing ‘bubbles of love’ at noon on Monday, April 25.They are calling on schools, churches and businesses to take part in Bubbles of Love 2011 to mark Parental Alienation Awareness Day.Mr Tavares said: “The bubbles represent love and when they go up in the air it represents taking love to a higher standard.”
