Home grown fruit and veg scheme gets boost

An interesting way of growing your own fruit and veg.

A scheme to boost local fruit and vegetable growing is to be championed by insurers Catlin Bermuda this summer. The Healthy Harvest project, from the Greenrock sustainable development charity, was set up in 2009 to revive local growing at community gardens around the Island.Catlin today pledged to support Greenrock over the next five years in building, planting and maintenance.Orchards and gardens will be set up within schools, playgrounds, parks, and on public and private property, Greenrock said.Charity president Andrew Vaucrosson said that Healthy Harvest can help create a sense of community on the Island.“The unique tastes and variety of locally grown food in Bermuda is slowly being forgotten from one generation to another,” he said. The project is being overseen by sustainable agriculture consultant Omari Dill. Caitlin will help getting new plots identified and planted for the next growing season.Company president and CEO Graham Pewter said: “Encouraging the community’s involvement in the growing, harvesting and consumption of locally grown produce is an initiative that we are only too happy to support.”Useful web link: www.greenrock.org
