Jail for man who had a knife in supermarket
A 20-year-old man who carried a steak knife into a Hamilton supermarket has been jailed.Mikhail Butterfield, of Seagull Lane in Pembroke, admitted bringing the knife into the Church Street MarketPlace on Church Street, but said he used it for scaling fish. He’s been in police custody since the March 5 incident, with a social inquiry report ordered by Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner on March 7.At his sentencing in Magistrates’ Court, Butterfield apologised: “I was in the wrong. I made a big mistake.”Noting that Butterfield had been on probation at the time of the offence, Mr Warner said: “This report doesn’t favour you in any way. This was not a mistake. You have repeatedly carried bladed articles, you have not responded to supervision, and you’ve refused to cooperate with probation.”The maximum sentence for carrying a bladed article is three years’ imprisonment.Mr Warner jailed Butterfield for 18 months, with time since March 7 taken into account.
