Residents look forward to Royal wedding
This Friday, Prince William of Wales will marry Catherine Middleton in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The Royal Gazette yesterday took to the streets of Hamilton to see what the public think about the Royal wedding and Premier Paula Cox’s attendance.Members of the public almost universally said they were excited for the upcoming event, but only a handful said they would be able to watch the ceremony because of work.Mary Vanderweg said she is disappointed she likely will not be able to watch the event the way she did the Royal wedding of Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana.“I watched Princess Diana’s wedding and I look forward to this one. Middleton seems like such a happy person.“There is a nice atmosphere around the Island with people looking forward to it.”Tammy Clarke-Richardson said she spent the weekend watching television programmes about the upcoming nuptials, and is now looking forward to the big day.“It the story I’m interested in. How they got together, her family’s history,” she said.Regarding the Premier’s attendance of the event, she said she had mixed feelings.“If she was invited, I think it’s protocol for her to go, but with the economy right now I think it might have been good if she turned down the offer,” she said. “If the UK is paying for the trip fine, but we have to be careful about our budget.”Patrick Henderson said that he was confident the Premier would use the opportunity to represent the Island.“I think she will do a wonderful job,” he said. “We need to give her a chance.”A Pembroke woman said she wasn’t particularly excited about the wedding, but said she was looking forward to seeing the hat the Premier would wear to the event.“Everyone will be wearing hats, and she’s known for her hats, so it will be interesting to see what type she wears,” she said.Meanwhile, Miriam Kaye said she is looking forward to wearing a fancy hat herself to celebrate the occasion.“I will probable miss watching the wedding because I’ll be at work, but I just really want to see the dress Ms Middleton is wearing,” she said.A Devonshire resident, who asked to be called Ms Smith, said that while she is excited about the upcoming wedding, she is disappointed that there are no commemorative items for sale on the Island.“I think it’s terrible that nobody on the Island has anything to sell to commemorate this.“I have seen people asking about where they could find something like a commemorative plates and cups.”A Sandys Parish woman said that she plans on waking up early to watch the wedding and plans to wake her friends up too.“I’m excited. I’m waking up one of my friends at 4am so we can watch it,” she said.“I watched the lifetime movie, I watched the documentary. It’s just really nice seeing everything unfold.“I know if I had met him, he would have been marrying me.”Alun Thomas said he is looking forward to the wedding as a sign of the younger members of the monarchy coming into their own.“It’s good,” he said. “They are two youngsters, the modern Royal family, and they should move the family forwards.“Shame it’s not going to be a day off like in England.”Dionne Pitt said she would try and watch Friday’s wedding, adding: “I will keep them in my prayers.”
