Taxi industry report will soon be made public
The public will soon have their say on new recommendations drawn up to improve the future of the taxi industry.Transport Minister Terry Lister is currently reviewing a report handed to him by the Taxi Authority Review Committee (TARC) at the end of last week. The report will be closely examined by transport bosses then posted on the Ministry of Transport’s website so “the public can access it”.A series of public meetings will then be held so that the public can ask questions and voice their opinions. The report is expected to touch upon issues such as GPS, the availability of taxis, the price of fares and vehicle insurance.Mr Lister formed the committee, which is chaired by Neville Tyrrell, earlier this year to determine if the Island needs a taxi authority. The committee had to consider the scope of the Taxi Authority, review the benefits of establishing the Authority, and determine how the Authority would function differently.Mr Lister said he received the TARC report on Friday and had been reviewing it over the weekend.A statement released on Mr Lister’s behalf read: “Minster Lister plans to discuss the report with the review team and technical officers in his Ministry.“Once the Minister and his team have had a chance to review the report it will be posted on the Ministry of Transport website so the public can access it.“Once the public has had a chance to review the report they will then have a chance to ask questions and voice their opinions at a series of planned public meetings.”When The Royal Gazette interviewed Mr Lister a couple of weeks ago, he said he was “very much looking forward” to seeing what the committee had come up with.During that interview he said: “We are looking for long-term success of the taxi industry and are really keen to get on with things.“We will continue to work to uphold standards and enhance standards of the taxi industry.”Committee members also included St David’s PLP MP Lovitta Foggo, who is the chairwoman of the Public Service Vehicles Licensing Board, Clyde Darrell, general manager at Grotto Bay Hotel, and taxi owners Owen Darrell and Irving Butterfield. Technical support was provided by the Bermuda Transportation Department.
