Education Minister says too many students suspended for “the wrong reasons”

Too many children are being suspended from public schools for “the wrong reasons”, Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith has claimed.Forty-four students were suspended last month, she told the House of Assembly this morning.Seventy percent of the students were disciplined with out-of-school suspensions; 29.5 percent of the suspensions were in-school.Dame Jennifer said she has since urged school principals to only suspend students as a last resort. She said children should only be suspended for disruptive behaviour once “progressive discipline” measures, such as warnings and detentions, had been taken.Dame Jennifer expressed her concerns that teachers and principals were too quick to suspend students. She said suspensions should not last more than five school days, adding: “There are rules and regulations and teachers must adhere to the law.”
