Man rescues longtail trapped in kite string

A member of the Bermuda Audubon Society came to the rescue of a feathered friend today.Alistair Border released a longtail entangled in kite string on the cliffs near the Surfside condominium complex in Warwick. The distressed bird was spotted by Surfside security guard Terry Williams, who called the Bermuda Audubon Society to assist.Mr Border scrambled down the cliffs, cut the string and took the longtail to the Aquarium to recuperate.“The kite string was draped all over the cliffs and had become tightly wrapped around one of the longtail’s wings,” said Audubon Society secretary Karen Border. “It shows how dangerous abandoned kite string can be for birds, especially larger birds such as longtails, herons and owls. We urge kite-flyers to make every effort, within the bounds of safety, to retrieve and remove the string if their kite crashes. This poor longtail was probably trying to fly into its cliff burrow when it became entangled. We expect it will make a full recovery and should be able to be released again soon.”
