Young Progressives honour Island's national heroes

The Young Progressives today celebrated the efforts of three of the Island’s national heroes.Government has announced that this year's National Heroes Day would celebrate the contributions of former parliamentarians EF Gordon, Pauulu Kamarakafego (Roosevelt Browne) and Sir Henry "Jack" Tucker.Approximately 40 people turned out for the ceremony at City Hall.Activist Eva Hodgson said she was proud Dr Kamarakafego was to be honoured. She said his fight for universal franchise allowed many other Bermudians to make an impact."He was a non-conformist, and because he was indifferent to status, even the black people who benefitted from him do not give him his due," she said.UBP Senator Michael Dunkley said Sir Henry never lost his connections with the community. He said of the Island’s third Premier: "He still rode his bike to the Cabinet Office every morning. He was never interested in the trappings of the office he had, he served the people of Bermuda."Dellwood Middle School students performed a short reenactment of Dr Gordon's life. A capella group Wild Honey and musician Glenn Iris performed several songs for the crowd.
