US visitor jailed for cannabis possession

A 59-year-old US visitor was today jailed for a month for importing cannabis to Bermuda.Edith Lord Wolff, of California, admitted in Magistrates’ Court bringing 35.6 grams of cannabis inside her luggage on a May 17 flight from New York. However, Wolff’s defence lawyer Marc Pettingill told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that his client suffered from Menieres Disease, an ear disorder causing dizziness, for which she was prescribed medical marijuana in her home state of California.Mr Pettingill said his client had been visiting friends and family in Bermuda for a number of years.Mr Warner countered that Wolff’s prescription for the drug was not valid in Bermuda. He fined her $3,000, plus 30 days’ imprisonment. The Royal Gazette understands that Wolff has filed an appeal.
