Bermuda ‘twins’ with Atlanta’s Buckhead
Hamilton now has a “sister community” in Atlanta, Georgia, thanks to the Island’s newest air link with the US.The city has twinned with Buckhead, an affluent community in northern Atlanta. The American city is home to key executives from such companies as Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo and AirTran, which last week began daily air service between Bermuda and Atlanta.A delegation from the Buckhead Coalition, a non-profit group made up of 100 chief executive officers, flew to the Island and met with Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling. “We suggested coming to Bermuda, and the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism put together the trip to help develop this connection with the Island,” explained Coalition development director Garth Peters, a former Bermuda Department of Tourism employee.“Our different members who have come here can connect with Bermuda on a broad spectrum.”The visiting group included Alana Shepherd of the Shepherd Spinal Centre; Sam Friedman of AFCO Realty, Tim Lowe of Lowe Engineers; Charlie Crawford of Private Bank of Buckhead, and Michael Robison of Lanier Holdings.A letter of greetings and a book about Buckhead was sent from Coalition President, Sam Massell, former Mayor of Atlanta. He wrote: “Our peoples are of common congeniality and southern hospitality, serving as the foundation of civic and economic commitment to our respective heritages.”Mr Massell said the new travel link to Bermuda made it important to nurture a relationship with the Island. “We are both major tourist destinations, and have fine hotels and restaurants, excellent shopping, and a common attitude of good will.”The group hopes for a reciprocal meeting with Bermudian business and community leaders to further the connection.Useful web link: www.buckheadis.com.
