The toilets kept working and the Spirit of Juno sailed the whole way to Bermuda, which meant that American political satirist Stephen Colbert’s second yacht trip to Bermuda went a whole lot better than his first.The star of the Emmy Award-winning Comedy Central programme ‘The Colbert Report’ arrived in Bermuda at 4am on Saturday morning.He and the rest of the Spirit of Juno crew placed second behind Tucana, the winner of the Charleston to Bermuda Race.‘The Colbert Report’ makes fun of everything from the death of Ming Ming the panda to Osama bin Laden to the race for economic dominance between the United States and China.Mr Colbert often wears a suit and red bow tie on his television show.When he arrived in Bermuda he was looking decidedly less nerdy, sporting shorts, a baseball cap and an inch of white stubble.After clearing customs around 10am on Saturday morning, he was met by his wife, Evelyn, and children, Madeleine, Peter and John, at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC).He stuck his family in a taxi with a very large white duffel bag presumably dirty laundry after seven days at sea and remained at RBYC to celebrate with his crew members.“It sure did go better than the last one. We sailed all the way here, we didn’t have to motor in” Mr Colbert told The Royal Gazette. “This time the toilets held, but I was so happy to see a land-based toilet. The facilities here [at RBYC] seem like the bathroom of the Taj Mahal compared to what we’ve been using.”He made his comments to us as he leaned against a wall. According to Mr Colbert, the stance was necessary because he still had sea legs.The comedian last participated in the Charleston to Bermuda Race in 2005.His yacht finished last and he was forced to fly back to the United States the next day. He never got a chance to see any of the Island, so this will be his first real visit here.“This time I plan to stay a few days with my family,” said Mr Colbert. “I’m really looking forward to going to the beach. The kids are really excited about going to the beach.”He wouldn’t say which hotel he was staying in, only that he was “staying around Bermuda”.Mr Colbert’s television show ‘The Colbert Report’ was a spin-off of ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’.When asked if he would bring his friend Jon Stewart next time, he said probably not as Mr Stewart is not particularly an outdoors person.“He worries about me when I do things like this,” said Mr Colbert.Mr Colbert grew up outside of Charleston, South Carolina, the youngest of 11 children. He teaches Sunday School in New Jersey.He is apparently a fan of fantasy writer JRR Tolkien novels and enjoys playing Dungeons and Dragons, a role-playing game popular among cerebral teenagers.The parallels between a little hobbit leaving his comfortable shire in search of adventure and Mr Colbert’s trip across the Gulf Stream seem uncanny.
