Mother angry after vandals attack daughter's memorial
A grieving mother has hit out at vandals who attacked a plaque in memory of her daughter who was killed in a road accident eight years ago.Renall Caisey said the cedar beam of the tribute, at the side of North Shore Road in Flatts since Alshe Caisey died in August 2003, had been bent over, with the cement on its base smashed. She said people had to climb over a fence to reach the memorial, suggesting it was done deliberately in an incident believed to have taken place on Friday evening.“That plaque was not bothering nobody,” Mrs Caisey told The Royal Gazette yesterday.“It was put there for a reason: it’s the place where she took her last breath and was for us to remember her. It was also supposed to remind Alshe’s friends to slow down.“It’s repairable, it’s just the thought that somebody would do a thing like this that makes us sad. This is not even funny.“I don’t think a child could have done it because it’s very heavy. And nobody hardly walks there anyway so someone must have gone to do it deliberately.”Berkeley Institute graduate Alshe Caisey was aged 20 when she died in a high-speed crash at 2am; she was a passenger on her best friend’s bike.Newspaper reports at the time said her mother’s last words to her had been to warn her to take her time on the road.Renall Caisey said yesterday: “The plaque has been there eight years, so we don’t know why somebody has done this now.”A Police spokesman said: ‘"The Bermuda Police Service would encourage anyone with any information about this incident to contact the Southside Police Station on 293-2222."
