Alphas and Kappas lace up for charity football match

Fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi are going head-to-head tomorrow in the name of charity. The two organisations, which boast large Bermuda followings, will face each other in a football match at Bernard Park’s North field at 6pm.Families are invited as well as charities, schools and faith organisations, one of which stands to win a $1,000 donation from the winning fraternity’s charity funds.“We have two very community-focused organisations, known in our community for service,” said police spokesman Dwayne Caines, speaking in his capacity as an Alpha member and a midfield footballer.“Kappa’s youth soccer tournament is probably one of Bermuda’s largest sporting events for boys and girls, and Alpha has myriad programmes dedicated to developing young men’s characters.“Aside from winning bragging rights for the fraternities on the Island, the more important thing is to support charities. Both our organisations at times get overwhelmed with requests for sponsorship and financial aid, and we can’t always meet that need. So, in short, this tournament is creating an avenue by which charities can come out and support their teams, and stand to win $1,000.”Organisations looking to win need to send along ten or more members of their group and submit their names. The fraternity colours need to be worn: black and gold for Alpha, red and white for Kappa. The winning team will choose a supporter’s name out of a hat.“It came out of a conversation,” said Kappa member Craig Tyrell. “We were joking with the Alphas, and it turned into a challenge.“It should be a lot of fun, a great family start to the weekend. The Kappas are a bit older than the Alphas, on average, so we will see if experience takes the day.”For more information, contact Mr Caines on 717-1906 or Mr Tyrell on 504-1870.lUseful websites: www.alpha-phi-alpha.com, www.kappaalphapsi1911.com
