Jobs go at Govt-owned golf courses
High-level layoffs have been made at the Island’s two Government-owned golf courses, The Royal Gazette understands.A total of at least six staff at Port Royal and Ocean View golf courses were informed on Tuesday that their positions had been terminated. The two public courses, which absorbed staff when the St George’s Golf Club was closed, are believed to have been losing money to the tune of about $2,000 a day.According to a golf insider, long-standing general manager of Port Royal Bill Pitt has been made redundant, with assistant manager Greg Maybury likely to take over some of his duties.Port Royal consultant Alan Douglas, who works closely with grounds staff at the golf course, will not have his contract renewed, and teaching professional player Judithanne Astwood has been let go.They were said to have been informed abruptly, told to pack their personal effects, and escorted from the premises. At Ocean View, general manager Marie Johnson and administrative assistant Marie Burgess have also both lost their jobs.Chairman of the board of trustees for the golf courses Nitin Aggarwall said that he was unable to comment, but confirmed that unspecified redundancies had been made, adding: “It is not a pleasant thing.”A number of union members, including maintenance workers, have also lost their jobs. Bermuda Public Services Union general secretary Ed Ball was not prepared to comment on the job losses. The job losses come as a foreign consultant, with a five-figure salary, has allegedly been kept on.To save costs Government is also understood to be planning to bring in one person to manage both golf courses.Nick Mansell, president of the Bermuda Golf Association who previously worked at Port Royal has been linked with a return to the course, although it is not clear in what capacity. Last night Mr Mansell said he was not in a position to comment.lUseful web link: www.portroyalgolf.bm.
