Raymond 'Yankee' Rawlins

Murder victim Raymond ‘Yankee’ Rawlins and his family were targeted by gunmen in the months before his death, but the man accused of killing him is not implicated, a jury heard.David Cox, 31, is on trial accused of shooting Mr Rawlins dead on August 9 2010 as the victim walked into the Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street, Pembroke. Two gunmen chased him into the club and shot him 16 times. Mr Cox is on trial alone, and denies premeditated murder and using a gun to commit murder. This morning, prosecutor Cindy Clarke told his trial of previous shootings affecting Mr Rawlins.“On December 16 2009 the deceased, Raymond Rawlins, was shot at on Court Street. A man other than the defendant has been tried and convicted for that shooting and this defendant was in no way implicated in that offence,” she explained.“On May 23 2009 the deceased’s father and brother were injured in a shooting inside the C&R Discount Store on Court Street. A man other than this defendant has been tried and convicted for his role in that shooting and the defendant was in no way implicated in that offence.”Prosecutor Takiyah Burgess said during her opening speech in the Cox trial that the jury may hear evidence of an ongoing feud between rival gangs known as 42 and Parkside. She said they may also hear that Mr Cox is a member of the 42 gang and that Court Street is an area where Parkside tend to hang out and frequent.Mr Cox denies the charges he faces and the case continues.
