Appeal to help re-open St George’s golf course

The St George’s golf course is set to reopen two years after it was closed but the group behind the plan needs help.It closed in July 2008 in the build-up to the implosion of the old Club Med site and the Golf Club itself has since been demolished. The course was expected to be overhauled as the new Park Hyatt project moves forward, with a major redesign by Nick Faldo. In an e-mail to members, the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce says: “The East End Division is excited to announce that through great efforts of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, in particular Chamber member The St George’s Club, and the Economic Empowerment Zone Agency and with the support of the Corporation of St George’s and the St George’s Foundation, the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce is now poised to reopen the St George’s Golf Course. But we need YOUR help to do it!“We all know the St George’s Golf Course was a key element of the East End ’s economic, sports and social scene. The golf course closure translated into thousands of locals and visitors over the past three years not coming to the East End.“St George’s needs the golf course to reopen! By reopening we will help stimulate the area and offer our guests and locals alike more to do in an area in desperate need of our assistance.“The Chamber needs your support in the form of corporate membership as we require one hundred corporate members in order to move forward. Corporate membership entitles five named staff to play as often as they wish for no additional fees. The cost is a very nominal $1,000. Consider offering it to your hard working employees as a small, inexpensive way of recognising their contributions. They will pay no green fee for the privilege of playing the course for one year. Currently 20 of your fellow Chamber members have signed up so we are looking to you to be part of the additional members 80 required.“Please join us in opening the St. George’s Golf Course by signing up for corporate membership either by going online or by reply to this e-mail and we’ll do it for you. Also, please forward this e-mail to any company who would be interested in supporting the East End . We cannot undo the past but collectively we can take control of our destiny and get the St. George’s Course open and bring some life back to the East End for Bermuda ’s benefit.”
