Cost of trash rises

Waste disposal rates at Tynes Bay are on the increase again next month rising by $15 per tonne.From July 1 truckers will have to pay more to dispose of their commercial waste in a bid to ensure the long-term success of the Tynes Bay waste-to-energy facility.The weekday rate will be $95 per tonne or $110 on Saturdays. The minimum charge of $12 per load remains unchanged.Fees were last increased on April 1, 2010. Rates rose then to $80 per tonne during the week and $95 on Saturdays.A Ministry of Public Works spokesman said: “These increases are necessary to support the ongoing cost of waste disposal operations at the Tynes Bay facility and to ensure the long-term sustainability of the plant.“The Ministry appreciates commercial operator’s cooperation and support in this regard.”
