Murder accused told police: 'It wasn't me', court hears

David Cox denies the premeditated murder of Raymond 'Yankee' Rawlins.

David Cox told detectives who interviewed him on suspicion of murdering Raymond (Yankee) Rawlins: "It wasn't me."Mr Cox said he was with a woman, who he declined to name, at the time in question, despite an eyewitness naming him as one of Mr Rawlins' killers. The jury in Mr Cox's trial watched the video interview on TV screens in Supreme Court this morning. He stands accused of being one of two gunmen who chased Mr Rawlins into the Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street around 12.23am on August 9 2010 and shot him 16 times. He's the only person on trial, and denies charges of premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit murder. The jury heard today from Detective Constable Don DeSilva that Mr Cox, 31, surrendered himself to police at Hamilton station later on the morning of the shooting. He was arrested shortly after 9am following his arrival at the station. At 7pm that day he participated in an interview with Det Con DeSilva and Detective Constable Warren Bundy. He told them he was at the Mid Atlantic Boat Club on North Shore Road, Devonshire, from around 8pm on August 8 "just eating food and chilling".He explained he was "talking to some girls" inside the club when his friend Julian Washington got shot outside the venue.Mr Cox said he heard, but did not see the shooting and after it happened "we all went in the girls' bathroom".He explained he'd arrived at the boat club on Mr Washington's bike, but left the venue when he got a lift with someone he referred to as "just this girl".Informed by Det Con DeSilva that an eyewitness at the Spinning Wheel identified himself as one of the murderers, and the incident was caught on security camera, he said: "It wasn't me."Quizzed further he replied: "I don't know what you're talking about." He refused to identify the woman he referred to in his alibi despite Det Silva telling him: "Now's the time to be saving your a*s."Mr Cox explained he surrendered to the police after his mother told him they'd had arrived at her house.
