Police agree compensation for teenager’s lost bike

Police have agreed to compensate a teenager after officers mistakenly threw away her motorbike.Shohreh Darooyan spent months trying to find out what happened to her Liberty auxiliary cycle after police took it from the scene of an accident she was in. The 19-year-old suffered a broken leg in an accident on the Causeway last December 25.Officers collected her bike from the scene and stored it at Southside Police Station.Ms Darooyan and her grandfather, retired police sergeant Dudley Proctor, were told in February that the vehicle had been thrown away by mistake.“We got a message from Southside telling us they have decided to pay back the full amount,” Mr Proctor said. “I know it might sound like a petty thing to some people, but it’s the principle. You can’t just get rid of a bike and not do anything about it.”Detective Inspector Steven Lightbourne said he had tried to track down what had happened.“It appears to have been a genuine mistake,” he said. “We do keep an inventory of wanted and unwanted vehicles and, by accident, this particular one seems to have gotten mixed up.”Informed by The Royal Gazette that she was to be compensated for her loss, Ms Darooyan said she was pleased the matter had been resolved.“I’m happy they’re paying for it,” she said. “I wish it hadn’t taken so long, but I’m just glad the whole thing has been sorted out.”Ms Darooyan said the accident had put her off riding and therefore had no plans to buy a new bike. She said she would give the money to her grandfather, who originally purchased the vehicle.“I don’t want to be out on a bike,” she said. “I’m trying to get a car licence so me and my poppa can share that.”
