Hamilton is to light up a little earlier for this year’s Christmas, with the Corporation resolving to have its decorations switched on for November. The City’s decision followed complaints about last year’s lighting coming on too late, by December 3.At a City meeting today, councillor Marshall Minors said: “By November 25, all the lights in the City will go on.”He added: “Decorations are going to be the same as 2010, but more concentrated in terms of where they’re used. This committee is wrestling with the funding issues, which will have to be kept within the existing budget.”For 2011, the City also plans to block off select locations on Reid and Court Streets, and deploy mobile Christmas trees to these areas.Alderman Pamela Ferreira pointed out that dim lighting on Front Street was “the biggest complaint by far about last year’s Christmas Parade”. In years past, she said, the street was better lit, but in 2010 “spectators could hardly see the parade”.Councillor Dennis Tucker added: “We were very disappointed that the retailers didn’t do anything to light up Front Street. Maybe this year they could be challenged to do more.”Conceding that budget issues remain a problem for the City, Deputy Mayor Glen Smith said: “The lights will go on the day after the American Thanksgiving holiday, and there will be continued efforts to improve them.”
