Bermuda tops shipping ‘white list’ in Europe
Bermuda’s shipping register has been placed at the top of the European “white list’ relating to safety. The Paris Memorandum of Understanding rates registries each year, based on the number of inspections and detentions in a rolling three-year period.Transport Minister Terry Lister told the House of Assembly: “The table is divided into a black list, a grey list and a white list. For the third year running, Bermuda has scored higher than any other ship registry and is positioned at the very top of the white list.“A position on the white list is critically important for the success of any shipping register. Flags that appear on the grey list or the black list are targeted in European ports for enhanced inspections.“These enhanced inspections are disruptive to ships’ crews, owners and managers.”He said Bermuda’s position on the list also makes it more attractive to charterers and owners seeking a good quality flag under which to register their ship.Bermuda also placed ninth out of 27 flags on the white list issued by group of states in the far east and Australasia.Mr Lister said: “I believe it would be appropriate for this Honourable House to extend its thanks and congratulations to the director and staff at our department of maritime administration for setting and maintaining such a high standard, which has achieved international recognition.”
