Lyme Regis remembers 400th anniversary of Sir George Somers' burial
Sir George Somers was recently remembered in his hometown of Lyme Regis with a ceremony to mark the 400th anniversary of his burial.The Church of St Candida and the Holy Cross decorated his Celtic cross memorial with a Bermuda flag, shells, and a parchment scroll recognising the anniversary in a ceremony on June 4.Sir George, who was born in Lyme Regis, colonised Bermuda after being shipwrecked on the Island.Following his death in Bermuda in November, 1610, his nephew Matthew Somers returned his body to Dorset, where on June 4, 1611, he was greeted by a ceremonial volley of muskets and an honourable burial.The town of St George’s and Lyme Regis are now twin cities, and their link will be celebrated in Lyme Regis on July 27 with the annual Sir George Somers Commemoration Parade.
