Girl on lilo rescued

A little girl had to be rescued by boat after she floated off on a lilo into St George’s Harbour.Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre got a call just before 6.45pm on June 20 to say the youngster had drifted off from her home near Wellington Oval. The centre asked a boat on the customs dock at Ordnance Island to assist but another vessel got to her first, within ten minutes of the initial call.A duty officer said the child’s age was not known. “She didn’t go very far. The little girl floated off from around the Wellington Slip Road area, near the cricket club. We managed to catch her quite quickly.”Earlier, the centre received a call about three children who had fallen off a jet ski at Cambridge Beaches in Sandys. The officer said: “They fell off the jet ski in bad weather and couldn’t get back to it. They all eventually washed up on the beach unhurt.”He said marine police attended after the call came in at 6.26pm. The children, whose ages are not known, reached land safely without the need for help by 6.30pm.Two sailing boats also called the centre for assistance on the afternoon of June 20 after their motors failed and they began drifting out to sea in strong winds.Marine police towed back the first vessel, an 18ft sailing boat with four people on-board, shortly after 4pm. It was close to Dockyard but couldn’t reach land due to the wind. The second vessel, a 28ft sailboat, called the centre just before 5pm but was towed to safety by friends.Useful website: www.rccbermuda.bm.
