Theatre Boycott remembered

Nine year-old Z'dao Dill ties a white ribbon of peace on the railing in Wesley Square on the observance of the 52nd Anniversary of the success of the Theatre Boycott which ended formal segregation in Bermuda.

Progressive Group member Erskine Simmons today called for young people to follow the example of Theatre Boycott and fight for a good cause, instead of fighting each other.Mr Simmons marked the 52nd anniversary of the protest which brought the beginning of the end of segregation by speaking at a gathering at City Hall. The 78-year-old joined today's leaders in calling for an end to gang warfare which means young men effectively impose barriers on themselves through fear of being shot on enemy territory.“When we draw barriers around ourselves, we exclude the possibility of making friends across that barrier,” he said.“I urge our young people to reconsider their behaviour as we try to work for a harmonious community.“What they really need is a project that they can involve themselves, that doesn't call for violence, that calls for co-operation.“Because the same people who are fighting one another can do a great job co-operating with one another.”Other speakers included National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief and Deputy Governor David Arkley.
