Esso City Tiger Mart dispute set for arbitration
A long-running dispute between workers at the Esso City Tiger Mart and owner Craig Cannonier, deputy leader of the One Bermuda Alliance, looks set to go to arbitration.A statement from the Bermuda Industrial Union this afternoon said it felt the Tiger Mart could be in contravention of the Trade Union Act 1964.The statement said: "For the past several months the Union has been negotiating with Senator Craig Cannonier, owner of the Esso City Tiger Mart and presently negotiations have reached a stalemate in spite of the fact that the majority of staff approached the Union in March 2010 requesting that we represent them at the bargaining table."On September 2, 2010, the ballot was held and the majority of the staff voted for the BIU to represent them."Since September 2010, the Union has had meetings on December 9, 2010, March 2, 2011, April 30, 2011, and was supposed to meet today July 4, with Senator Cannonier."The Union has written numerous letters and contacted him via email, however all to no avail. We have informed the Acting Director of Labour and Training on a couple of occasions about the stalemate and negotiations are still at a standstill."The statement added: "The Union has no other option but to request an arbitration as well as weighing other options to settle the matter as the staff have become disillusioned with the process due to management's constant delay tactics."
