Tournament honours road crash victim Adam Goodwin
Fishermen reeled in some big catch in a bid to raise cash in memory of beloved late sailor Adam Goodwin. The third annual Bermuda Billfish Release Cup took place off Dockyard and there were a few heart-rending moments, as family and friends paid tribute to the 22-year-old who died in a bike accident last October.Money raised in the tournament went towards the Bermuda Sloop Foundation’s Mariner-Mentor Scholarship in Adam’s honour. At the time of his death Mr Goodwin was first officer aboard the Spirit of Bermuda, and considered to be an extraordinary young sailor. Friends and colleagues described him as “warm and empathetic”.The tournament’s assistant director Lynda Wilson said: “His character, skills and focus were exemplary and touched many young lives. So much so that the Sloop Foundation, along with the Goodwin family and many supporters, created the memorial scholarship.”A 70ft American custom yacht Que Mas, captained by Travis Butters, caught the largest blue marlin, weighing in at 600lbs.Other teams were just as successful on day two of the tournament, but in the end Que Mas caught a white marlin and secured their lead, said Ms WilsonShe said: “This win for team Que Mas including owner Wally Whitley, Capt Travis Butters [and] mates Robert Helms and Donny Lange now puts them in a league of their own having won all four Bermuda Billfish Tournaments and the Bermuda Triple Crown Championship in 2008.“This is no small accomplishment, especially considering the talent they have fished against over the past seven years. Big congratulations and nicely done to team Que Mas.”An awards banquet was held at Bonefish Bar & Grill in honour of the competitors and included a silent auction to benefit the Bermuda Sloop Foundation. Many of the boat owners also made cash donations to support the Adam Goodwin Scholarship. Tournament director Dan Jacobs was able to present Adam’s parents, David and Julie, with a cheque for $4,500.The annual event is held by Bonnier Corp and sponsored by Bermuda Department of Tourism, West End Development Company, Bonefish Bar & Grill, Pier 41 Marina, Marlin magazine, King Sailfish Mounts, Sport Fishing magazine, Digicel and Salt Water Sportsman magazine.Useful websites: www.bermudasloop.org, www.bermudareleasecup.com.
