WSC issues warning about cliff diving

The Bermuda Water Safety Council has sent condolences to the family of dead diver Bilal Furqan and issued advice to prevent similar tragedies in future.Mr Furqan, 41, from St David’s, died last week after succumbing to severe head and neck injuries sustained while diving off a cliff at Admiralty House Park beach.Anthoni Lightbourne, chairman of the safety group said: “The Bermuda Water Safety Council would like to take this opportunity to convey its condolences to the family and friends of Mr Bilal Furqan in their time of bereavement.“This is truly a tragic event, and it underscores the many dangers of diving from high places. Cliff diving, diving off the rocks and even off docks all have their inherent dangers and swimmers should never dive in areas that they are not familiar with.“Children should be discouraged from diving from great heights and always be under supervision in and around the waters and this applies to private and public pools as well.”Mr Lightbourne also urged boaters and jet ski operators to check their safety equipment, including life jackets, before setting off, and to observe the rules of the waterways.
