New fisheries hotline launched
The Department of Environmental Protection has announced a new hotline for the public to contact fisheries wardens and managers.The public can now contact fisheries officials regarding illegal fishing or the catching of protected species on 705-FISH (3474).Director of Environmental Protection Fred Ming said: “Our fisheries wardens do a fine job but we need public support with enforcement of the Fisheries Regulations.”Common infractions include breaking the ‘one fish per boat per day’ limit on catching black rockfish, the selling of fish by unlicensed fishermen and fishing in seasonally protected areas.There are also several species of marine life protected due to past over-exploitation, such as the West Indian top shell, or their important role in the ecosystem, such as parrot fish.
