Former Deputy Governor takes up new role on South Atlantic islands
Bermuda’s former Deputy Governor Mark Capes has been appointed Governor of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.Mr Capes, deputy to Governor Sir Richard Gozney and his predecessor Sir John Vereker from 2006 to 2009, brings to an end his two-year stint as Chief Executive in the troubled Turks and Caicos Islands.He succeeds Andrew Gurr as Governor of his new territory, a 162-square mile collection of islands in the South Atlantic, with a population of around 5,600.Mr Capes said on the Foreign Office website: “I am delighted to have been given this exciting opportunity to serve as Governor for the people of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha at such an important juncture in the history of the islands.“I look forward to working for a secure and prosperous future for the islands and to getting to know those who live and work on them.”
