Garbage collection worker protests at depot

Protest: Trash truck worker Dennis Nesbitt who says he was injured on the job holds a picket sign outside of the Marsh Folly facility yesterday morning.

A garbage collection worker who says he was injured on the job has resorted to picketing along Marsh Folly Road.Dennis Nesbitt, 52, claimed he was owed an unspecified amount of sick pay from Government’s waste management department.Carrying a sign that read ‘No Human Right, No Labour Right’, Mr Nesbitt stood yesterday outside entrance to the Public Works depot.According to medical reports from September 2010 and June, Mr Nesbitt suffers back pain on a daily basis. He claimed his doctor has stated he sustained a long-term disability three years ago when he fell off the jump step at the back of a collection truck.Said Mr Nesbitt: “I was off work a couple months. They gave me a back brace, I was fine.“Then we were driving fast through a residential area, the driver slammed on the brakes, and I had to brace myself to keep from going into the back of the truck.”He said he suffered pain in his upper chest, back and knees as a result and has since been “walking like a snail”.“I’ve been living off my savings and I’m down to $95 in the bank,” Mr Nesbitt said.“I’ve still got to pay my doctor’s bill, my rent, my electricity, and I’m still owed a month’s pay for 2010.”A waste management spokesman last night said Government was unable to comment on employee matters due to confidentiality.
