VSB still waiting for Minister DeSilva to retract comments
Health Minister Zane DeSilva has not yet responded to claims that he misrepresented a VSB news report in Parliament last week. The dispute arose from comments made by Mr DeSilva in response to news stories linking his decision to permit the sale here of generic drugs from India, Israel and Brazil with the formation of a new healthcare firm by former Premier Ewart Brown. The Minister took issue with a VSB news report which, he claimed, suggested that the legal notice announcing Dr Brown’s company was discussed at a meeting he held with pharmacists about the new drug importation rules.VSB news director Bryan Darby defended the broadcast, arguing that the story reported both the legal notice and the meeting but did not make an explicit connection between the two. The station has since asked Mr DeSilva to retract his comments, but as of yesterday Mr Darby had “received no communication” from the Minister.Meanwhile, the ministerial statement which referred to the news report was read in the Senate yesterday verbatim by Junior Health Minister Cromwell Shakir.
