A street festival was hosted in North Hamilton to celebrate Emancipation Day yesterday. The free event, organised by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, was designed to give people a better understanding of the Island's rich black heritage and culture.Attendees were treated to a dramatic presentation called ‘The Creativity, Conscience and Connection of the African Spirit' produced and directed by Amir X.Along with ethnic music and documentary films, there were also presentation tents featuring informative discussions on topics including African creativity in medicine, cuisine, religion and education.Emancipation Day 2011 falls on Thursday, 28 July.Slaves across the British Empire were granted their freedom on August 1, 1834.Mr Weeks said: “While we should not lose sight of the very real sense of oppression and injustice that persons of African descent continued to experience after [that date] we should not forget nor ignore the very real achievements that our ancestors, with very few resources, were able to accomplish as they sought to build their families, their communities and their identities as freed men and women.”Click here for more pictures
