Back-to-basics St George’s golf course is doing well

Visitors Evan Zimmerman, Dr Rick Scott, and Patrick Gill look on as Ross Zimmerman putts his ball on the 11th Green at the St George?s Golf Course.

Business is picking up at the St George’s Golf Course, which formally reopened last month as a municipal course.Cheryl Hayward-Chew, of the St George’s division of the Chamber of Commerce, said the reopened course has been attracting both tourists and locals to the East End.“The number of players is growing and consists of about 50 percent local and 50 percent overseas visitors,” she said.“The rain last week was welcomed, needless to say, as the greens were dry.“The Bermuda Chamber of Commerce is doing an ongoing corporate and individual membership drive as we feel the East End golf course supported area businesses.”The course was closed by its board of trustees in July 2008 after it was projected to lose more than $600,000 for the year ending March 2009.In order to keep costs down, the course is being run as a municipal course, with no professional, a small maintenance staff and only pull carts for golf bags.Golfers can sign up for memberships at www.stgeorgesclub.bm and tee times can be booked on www.tee.bm.
