Overwhelming public response to food drive for the needy

A crusade to replenish the Island’s food charities has met an overwhelming response, according to Eliza Dolittle Society executive director Margaret Ward.Forty businesses, including The Royal Gazette, have now signed on for collection boxes to take in canned goods and other non-perishable foods. So far, a further 23 businesses have offered to collect from staff. The collection runs through next week, the first Make Hunger History campaign.Public drop-offs include Sandys 360, Lindo’s Warwick, all White’s Supermarket locations, The Athletic Club, all post office locations, Churchill’s in St. George’s, BS&R Group, Bermuda Gas Showroom, Paget Dental Group and DeFontes Broadcasting Company Ltd.“We’ve had great support from supermarkets, which for public collections are perfect,” Ms Ward said. The charity has also picked up plenty of volunteers to collect and sort the food, which will be divided among charities for the Island’s needy at the start of October.Useful website: www.elizadolittle.com.
